Seeing yourself on zoom is terrifying but there are ways how to improve your video conference appearance naturally that can help.

Video conferencing has become the go-to way to conduct business these days. We utilize video conferencing to help keep ourselves safe-to get business done. But we are noticing increasingly of the things we don’t like about our appearances. We need to find ways how to improve your video conference appearance naturally.

Seeing yourself on zoom is terrifying but there are ways how to improve your video conference appearance naturally that can help. It’s almost like the makers of the webcam colluded with plastic surgeons and dermatologists to force you to take action.

Your skin is pale, and what’s worse is the way your neck looks—the camera gets under there–under your chin—and every wrinkle sag is highlighted in relief by deep shadows and crinkles. Looking down at the camera from a laptop, your eyes look half closed and if you need to squint to read a table or graph you look beady eyed and untrustworthy.

Part of this is the lens of the webcam and is related to distortion—part of it is positioning of the camera relative to your face which is staring at the monitor—part of it is the unflattering light from the monitor. Several suggestions are in order.

A lot of employers and professors require you to keep it on, though. That will make this option less viable for many people. There are a couple of other things you can do to help improve your on-camera appearance. The other two options are simple but can make an enormous difference.

Ring Light

This diffused light which you put in front of your laptop allows you to create fill light which balances the color issues and eliminates the deep shadows that are emphasized by the lower unnatural light of the monitor as it illuminates your neck…if you don’t do that, just put the laptop in front of a window in your house.

Going outside is not an option because it looks unprofessional….

Angles

Place your laptop up high and face the camera down. Downward angles have been made popular thanks to the selfie. Selfie professionals have found that downward angles improve your appearance in photos, so it should work for a video conference appearance, right? Absolutely.

This angle can amplify a youthful appearance without much effort at all.
