Thyroid Eye Disease Before and After Photos

Thyroid eye disease — also called Graves’ disease — is a bulging of the eyes and eyelid retraction. This creates a “bug-eye” appearance in patients, which may cause them to look angry, worried, or afraid. Dr. Wulc gives each of his patients undivided, individual attention to help them look and feel more like they did before this condition altered their appearance–and while at it, we also try to turn back the clock visually —

Frequently Asked Questions About Thyroid Eye Disease Surgery

What are the first signs of thyroid eye disease?

Thyroid eye disease is more prominent in women and can cause the following symptoms:

  • Bulging of the eyes and eyelid retraction, creating a “bug-eye” appearance
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Difficulty moving the eyes
  • Dry or watery eyes

Do eyes go back to normal after treatment for thyroid eye disease?

Some of the medical IV infusion treatments now available for patients who have thyroid eye disease may not be completely curative: the disease may return after treatments have been discontinued, and careful follow-up is needed to assure that things indeed have gone back to a “new normal”–better vision, less double vision, and less eye swelling are expected after these treatments..

If the autoimmune problem that is present in thyroid eye disease is under control, it is unlikely that after surgery– and after the desired result is achieved– that there will be a need for further intervention. Normal may not be completely achievable, but improvement, dramatic improvement, is expected.
